London Inline (& Quad) Stroll

This weekend is the London Inline Marathon organised by our friends at LondonSkaters Speed Team. If interested, it’s not too late for the challenge: http://www.londoninlinemarathon.com/ For those of you preferring something more chilled, here is a more relaxed alternative of a friendly 8 mile skate around Central London. The route is a combination of old favourites with a few variations to keep it fresh – and if I got it right, some nice smooth straight sections to glide along.

Ladbroke Groove

At only 10 miles, this Friday the route is short and sweet. We’ll head off towards Harrow Road, mainly so we can enjoy the long gentle downhill along Ladbroke Grove. And as we’ll be in the area, we’ll also take the long smooth downhill on Kensington Church Street. There’s plenty of other nice smooth stretches, so bring your skates and your smiles and start the weekend on a roll!

After the twisting, turning, kerb-hopping, stair-climbing bumpy madness of last weeks’ Star Wars skate, this week we’d like to offer its polar opposite: It goes west. But more importantly, it’s composed of long straight stretches, on roads of nicely smoothed out surface. And it comes with, for a change, a half-decent three day weather forecast.

To Those That Grind

Recent weather has been good for the roses. If we lived on Jamaica’s Blue Mountains, it would have helped our coffee beans too. So this week, we pay respect to the beans. We make homage to roasters, we tip our hats to those that grind. This Sunday let your skates celebrate all that is caffeine and let your wheels feel the buzz. We’ll also have half time near some of the best coffee shops in London. Some of them grind their own beans, and that’s where we’re heading!

It’s a tenuous link to name a skate for the fact that pronunciation of its date makes the oronym of a popular science fiction franchise catchphrase, but really what are you expecting here? Sophistication? Pah. Friday is international Star Wars Day, say the geeks, and we’re grasping at straws. So the heck with it.

This week we set off to find the droids we’re looking for, starting with the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is Soho. We must be cautious. Skate in single file to hide your numbers. Don’t let a stranger stroke your Wookie. And remember that dark side cookies aren’t as tasty as they sound.

Then to Hoth! … nee Smithfield … where the frozen expanse of the meat market might offer a moment of sanctuary. Only a moment though, for we must make rapid evasive manoeuvres through the asteroids, err … alleyways of Newgate on the way to halftime at Tower block AA 42. Then the perilous trip back wends via the concrete jungle of central London, before making the jump to light speed along the newly resurfaced length of Embankment.

Be sure to ‘do’, or ‘do not’, there is no ‘try’. Tonight will be adventure skating. And yes no doubt about it, it’s going to be exactly like Star Wars. *AHEM*

Still, should be worth it, weather permitting. Get your skates on Padawans, trust your feelings … and use the Fourth!

The Apology

The apology is because this is NOT a snail stroll, sorry Guys! It’s the only weekend I can run the skate till after the actual Olympics. Normal service will be resumed next month.

It is actually a ONE WAY to the Olympic park. I ran this skate last Autumn and it was well received, so I thought we could go back to see what has changed. It is fairly flat and smooth, but like all skates in London there are some rough bits.

Draft Conditions

Yes, we are all distraught by the current drought conditions. Nevertheless, should the current drought relent to the point where we don’t need to stay indoors at the pub, playing draughts whilst having a draught then we’ll go out skating this Friday – you can always try and get a draft off the skater in front on the long straight bits! And please don’t bring your hosepipe, these are banned.

Race Registration Discount

Prices for registering teams for the 24 hour Le Mans Skate race are set rise on 22^nd May. If you’re planning on building a team, register before that date to earn a €10 discount.

Many LFNS and Sunday Stroll marshals and regular skaters from London join the race around the famous Bugatti Track in Le Mans, which is about an hour south of Paris. There are various categories of teams, including Endurance (3 to 5 people) and Prestige (6 to 10 people). Last year one of the LFNS marshals came second in the Duo category, and another two LFNS marshals turned in excellent results in the Solo category, showing the world that London is home to world class skaters.

So, build your team and enjoy skating on the legendary Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans, where over the course of 90 years the best drivers as Jacky Icks, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman or Henri Pescarolo helped transform a field into a world famous race track.
