This Week, on Wheels

Tonight, the LondonSkate will be following the Clapham route
southwards, travelling through Fulham, Embankment, Battersea Rise and
Clapham Common. There's a lovely downhill just after the half time
stop. 7:30pm on Serpentine Road by the bandstand for an 8pm start.
See you there!

== THIS WEEK: Mind the Gap ==

On FRIDAY we’re running the CIRCLE LINE skate to celebrate our 6th
birthday. The last time we skated this route was in November 2005 and
we can’t quite believe we left it so long before doing it again! Last
night’s route check confirmed that there are no engineering works, or
leaves on the line.

At 19 miles this is a longer than usual LFNS, and that means we'll be
leaving promptly at 8pm. If you're late and miss the start, you can
join us at Liverpool Street, the first of two stops. And in keeping
with the Circle Line theme, we’ll be wearing YELLOW!

As usual, we’ll be joined by our FireBrox sound system, and we’ve
been working a music mix for weeks. Hopefully you’ll hear that
London’s Calling, we’ll be taking you Round Round but won’t actually
be Going Underground (even at Baker Street), our marshals will be
wearing Yellow but are somewhat more Downtown than Uptown Girls, and
that a disco mix is a perfect way to party on the lovely Kensington
Church Street downhill.

On this week’s SUNDAY STROLL, Alan will be exploring some of the more
genteel areas of our fair city: Victoria, Belgravia and Chelsea. To
accommodate the large number of novice skaters who are starting to
join us, we’ll be running at a gentle pace, ideal for first-timers.
Half time just off Victoria Street.

== LAST WEEK ==

"great skate. smooth surfaces, good music and an absence of angry
taxi drivers. I had a real blast." - a skater

On last week’s LFNS, we went loopy to Little Venice through twisting
mews to reach Notting Hill for half time. Speeding through Holland
Park and Knightsbridge, we thought we were back to the park before
lead marshal Edd looped around Hyde Park Corner, down to Victoria,
past No 10 for the final ascent by the Ritz and a last mad dash back
to the park.

"Must be a chef's convention on wheels" - a bystander

In the SUNDAY STROLL’s checkered history, we’ve always squared up to
our routes, and this week was no exception. Venturing northwards to
Marylebone we criss-crossed from west to south, then north to east,
cobbling together something approximating a chessboard, in honour of
skater Big Steev's 40th birthday.

We sneaked into his music collection which formed a basis for this
week's music mix. Did you like it? Want to hear more or less of the
same? Let us know using our feedback form.

Congratulations to Sandra for completing her first Stroll. We'll see
you next week then!

== MARATHONS FOR EVERYONE ==

Skating a marathon is much easier than running one (they take between
1 and 3 hours to complete, depending on your ability). There are 3 in
the UK to choose from this year.

* The North Region Marathon (Preston), 3rd June. Incorporating the
British Championships for the first time. This is a lovely flattish
surface, do try this one if you can club together with others and
share transport costs.

* Goodwood Roller Marathon, 29th July (Goodwood, Sussex). Organised
by the Camberley Skaters, described as "a great day out and a perfect
start if you are new to skating marathons. All skaters are welcome no
matter what level or style of skating".

London Inline Marathon, 2nd September. It’s being held at a new venue
this year, The Hillingdon Cycle Circuit. The course is less hilly
than the old Eastway circuit.
