    the London Friday Name Skate

* What to do when it's wet
* World Naked Bike Ride

== THIS WEEK : FIVE YEARS (MY BRAIN HURTS A LOT) ==

According to some sources, this weekend marks the quinquennial of the
SUNDAY STROLL. According to others, there were already Sunday
afternoon skates back in 2001, and yet others say we should only start
counting from 2004 when I started doing it. Erm, that should read
"only start counting from 2004 when it left the safety of Hyde Park
and ventured out onto the road". Still, any excuse for a celebration,
right? This Sunday, we are doing our first ONE WAY STROLL of the
season; that is, we are NOT bringing you back to Hyde Park at the
end. So bring some shoes with you so that you can get a bus or tube,
unless you want to skate back on your own.

The route takes us through the West End and the City to a half time
break at Tower Hill. Then through Docklands and along the banks of the
river before turning north to finish in Mile End Millennium Park -
handy for the Central line!

On the LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT SKATE, Lead Marshal Sol will take us for a
12.5 mile tour to see how many streets in central London we can find
that bear the same name as our marshals. Can you spot all 11? The
route takes us from Edgeware Rd to Farringdon with the half time stop
at Tottenham Court Rd.

And TONIGHT, the LondonSkate's doing 'Shopper's Delight'. That means a
cruise around the West End to gawp at the tourists on Shaftesbury
Avenue, Oxford Street and Trafalgar Square before swooping down to the
river and back to Hyde Park through Chelsea . Half time is at Parson's
Green.

== LAST WEEK ==

"Nice relaxed skate (by Friday standards). Thanks all!"

"When the cry went up to "occupy the square" and bikes lay down on the
road in front of Westminster Palace, I, too, packed up the kids and
went home. The police managed to clear at least one lane of traffic,
but I didn't want to be around when the water cannons arrived."

(oh wait, that wasn't us, that was Critical Mass)

"FAST PAYER, GREAT EBAYER, A+++ RECOMMEND!!!"

(um, nor that. Can we get a new comments-gathering service? This
one's broken)

After some umming and erming over the forecast we decided to go ahead
with last FRIDAY's skate out East to London Wall and down the south
bank. Nobody died, nobody was arrested, and the nearest we got to
water cannon was a few drops of rain at half time. Oddly quiet,
though, for which we apologise: our electronics guru is looking at the
Firebrox as we write to find out what stopped working, and we hope to
have it back on the road this week.

== WOW ANNUAL 2006 ==

THis went unremarked last week, but there's now a full year's worth of
Week on Wheels in our web site archive. Seems longer. This time last
year it looks like we were off to London Wall and Battersea having
just come back from Barnes. Plus ca change ...

No mention of really awful weather, though, which is a shame because
it means we have to recycle the same old jokes with new text, instead
of just pointing you at the last lot.

Speaking of which:

== WHAT TO DO WHEN IT'S WET ==

We don't run skates in the rain (some find it unpleasant or dangerous,
doubly so for marshals trying to get past the pack or who may have to
take evasive action). But what else is ther to do in this town?

We've spoken to a large number of London's cinemas, museums, bookshops
and pubs, and can confirm exclusively that many of them will allow
people in wearing shoes so you need not get your bearings wet while
visiting. Often they're in covered venues too, and several even have
heating so you need not wear the thermal fleece.

Also: non-skating friends? Weather like this is a good time to go and
see them; you may not get another chance for a while unless you injure
yourself.

== NAKED WOMEN! (and men) ON BICYCLES ==

SATURDAY 9th JUNE is the 4th year of the World Naked Bike Ride (and
Skate). Each year more and more people participate in this protest
against oil dependency and car culture - including, in past years,
several LFNS skaters and marshals. The dress code is "bare as you
dare" - wear as little or much as you wish. The police have approved
the ride and will be doing traffic control at intersections.

The route is 6 miles and only has one difficult bit for skaters - the
cobblestones of Covent Garden (not impossible, but demanding).
Organisers are expecting over 1000 participants, and tell us that more
than 100 skaters are planning to come.

It's part of National Bike Week and London Sustainability Week. And
there's a web site.
