== THIS WEEK: OVER AND OVER ==

It's the LONDON FLYOVER NIGHT SKATE this week: last month we had to
passover the flyover when it started raining at 7:55; this month we're
having another go. Sadly it's no longer Markus' birthday, though.
Half time is on Union Street, second half is faster, and as we're
going south of the river there shouldn't be any trouble with taxis.

Continuing the recycling theme - after the SUNDAY STROLL last week was
washed out, this week we're planning to try that again too. This is a
6.6 mile cobble-free route especially suited to less-experienced
skaters, so if you started skating recently and haven't finished a
Stroll before (perhaps due to it being a 12 mile trek out to
Greenwich, or maybe more prosaically because you spent half an hour
sheltering under a tree instead), come and have another go. Half time
is on the King's Road, next to a scrummy ice-cream shop. We set off
at 2pm from Serpentine Road in Hyde Park.

TONIGHT the LondonSkate's doing VICE CITY: a tour of Victoria and
Embankment with half time at Liverpool St. Meet 7:30 by the bandstand
on Serpentine Road,

"Most of the characters wear the then-fashionable white or pastel
baggy cotton suits and, like Miami Vice, much of the action takes
place in mansions, on speedboats, or in other glamorous settings."

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto:_Vice_City

Baggy suits obviously good for wearing kneepads inside trousers ...

== LAST WEEK ==

Happily, "Have-a-stack" Hill last FRIDAY did not live up to its name
for most (really, we should save that joke for another time): we
reached the bottom still upright and without too many incidents. Lots
of new skaters out for the first time on this 13 mile route, so well
done to all that finished it.

SUNDAY? More like "What sun?" day. Weather looked great until 2:05 -
just as we were about to set off, the hydrologic cycle span up without
warning. Apologies to people who made the trip specially, but we can
only point out the Met Office didn't predict that one either.

== HARD CELL ==

If you noticed the Firebrox was a bit quiet towards the end of
Friday's skate last week: it's the batteries, guv. It seems our usage
profile is a bit different from the average invalid chair, and one of
the two 26Ah batteries no longer holds a charge. We're looking into
redesigning the power supply with sexy new technologies like Li-ion,
but in the meantime we've ordered another.

== LIGHT ON THEIR FEET ==

The Mayor's Thames Festival this year is promised to be smaller(!) and
better than ever. After logistics concerns last year, the organisers
decided to restrict the number of floats returning this year, so we're
very happy to be able to say that we've just heard our application was
accepted for the Night Carnival parade.

So now we have two months to come good on what we promised, including
a mobile rollerdisco, a divine visitation, a snakefight on wheels, and
an abduction by hairy Vikings. If you know good cheap sources of
glitter balls, Scotchlite, fishing rods, bamboo strips, glowsticks,
electro-luminescent thingy, project managers or cornucopia machines
(the last two may be a bit of a stretch) you know how to get in touch.
The rest of the usual suspects - and the unusual suspects - please
take this as first notice of imminent arm twisting. September 16th is
the date: it should be fantastic, in one sense of the word or another.

== SKATE PATROL ==

It appears that the other day when we weren't looking we crossed the
magic "1000 subscriber" line for Week on Wheels. Which is all very
gratifying given that we've only been going for a year, but at the
same time could be said to be somewhat puzzling - we don't see 1000
people out on the street skates, so where are you all?

If you read this mailout every week dissuaded by the warnings about
turns and stops and downhills, thinking "gosh, that sounds far too
difficult", why not head along to the skate clinic at Skate Patrol?
They're in Hyde Park every dry Sunday afternoon, and they will - for
free - teach you how to go, how to stop, and how to change direction.

                                       http://www.skatepatrol.co.uk

They're also offering training for volunteers at 4pm this Sunday, as
it happens: a practical 'how to teach' session, plus a quick theory
test. The session is open to anyone who is able to stop using a heel
brake.

== STILL HERE? ==

Help us settle an argument here in the Week on Wheels editorial suite.
We don't hear a lot from our readers. Sure, we get mentioned
sometimes on the Serpentine Road forum, but it can be a bit confusing -

"I read it every week and think it's pretty good!"
"... into the ... mediocrity morass"

So 'pretty good' or a 'morass of mediocrity'. Or 'I never read this
far down the page'. Let us know.

== OVER AND OUT ==

Doesn't the time just fly past? Registration for the 5th London
Inline Marathon is now open (as predicted two weeks ago): you have
until 10th August before the price goes up. In the meantime, that's
all from us. If you have comments, use the feedback form. If you
don't want more of this drivel, use the unsubscribe link. This mail
is sent from an address that doesn't accept replies, so don't reply by
mail.
