FRIDAY - GO WEST (AGAIN)
Continuing our theme of 'Nights out in SW London', this week Lead
Marshal Markus is taking the London Friday Night Skate on a 12.5
mile trip to Battersea, with a black route going up Nine Elms
Lane. "I don't know what all the fuss is about, we don't skate over
any ploughed fields this week," said Markus proudly.

SUNDAY - TAKE THEM BALLY SKATERS TO THE TOWER
This Sunday we're making a trip to the Tower and winding our way
through the West End and the City past some famous landmarks.
Courting controversy we'll pass the Old Bailey and the High Court
and in special honour of one of our marshals, we'll stroll along
Saffron Hill. Measuring some 9 miles, this route is a slightly
longer than a normal Sunday Stroll, but then it's been a while since
we last did one, so let's take them bally skaters to the tower!

==LAST WEEK==
FRIDAY - Last Friday Sol took the skate to the wild west in search
of cowboys, twirly ropes and flappy trousers. Firebrox made a
welcome return to the LFNS following his hardware overhaul. Powered
by legs of Rick, the Brox pumped out a Roggiemix to the good
citizens of Southfield and Putney.
But with some 15 miles to fit into our 2 hour slot, Sol was not
distracted by Shaggy or flappy pants, which is unusual for her.
Instead she cracked the whip, left early, had a short half time and
kept the pace fast throughout. Like any good cowgirl, this seemed to
go down well, with many a skater declaring it was the best skate of
the year. Rick and Brox also had a sweaty fun filled evening. Brox
wants to thank Rick for his trick with the ropes, and Rick wants to
thank the skaters that helped with the hilly bits. We want to thank
everyone for everything - well done one and all!
SUNDAY - Close but no cigar! Last Sunday we tried in vain to run a
skate but even though it was dry at 2pm, our Lead Marshal had skated
the route that morning and found it covered in damp leaves and
puddles... so even without the rain it would've be horrible. By the
time 3.30 arrived.. well you know the rest. We'll re-run the Cuban
Cigar skate next year.
==GRIPE WATER==
There was some confusion last Sunday when about 20 skaters turned up
at Hyde Park expecting to go on a Sunday Stroll. The skaters were
not exactly griping about the lack of rain, but they didn't
understand why they had not been told the skate had been cancelled.
We understand that it’s not always easy to check our web site on
Sunday morning to see the Go/No Show notice telling everyone whether
the skate is going ahead. We also know that many people don’t want
to use the WAP version of the Go/No Show notification system. And
we’re aware that on rare occasions, like last Sunday, the absence of
rain at lunchtime is no guarantee that the skate will go ahead at
2pm.
However, each lead marshal puts many hours of work into the skate
during the week before their skate is scheduled to run, and it’s the
lead marshal that makes the final decision a few hours before the
skate is due to start. With so much work invested in the skate
beforehand, the lead marshal is not going to cancel a skate unless
they really believe the weather would make skating dangerous as well
as unpleasant.
We very much regret it when people turn up at the park to find that
the skate has been cancelled. Unfortunately we are still thinking of
ways to avoid this happening. Please bear in mind that nobody
connected with the LFNS and Sunday Stroll makes any money from the
skate, so paying someone to stand in the park to tell people the
skate has been cancelled is not a realistic option.
In a recent discussion on www.serpentineroad.co.uk someone suggested
a free SMS alert service. We’ll be looking into this and the other
suggestions that have been offered, and hope to bring you some good
news very soon. Meanwhile, if you don’t have broadband at home, it
might be a good idea to phone a friendly skater to check if the
skate is going ahead before heading to the park.

== PLANNING: THE SCOUT IS OUR SECRET WEAPON ==
With so many marshals milling around on Sunday Strolls and London
Friday Night Skates, you might be forgiven for wondering how they
know which way to go - surely they don't all know the route?
Some say the Lead Marshal communicates the route using special
bearings and lubricant, in actual fact it turns out they normally
use a piece of paper. Having designed the route and checked there
are no unskateable chunks of gravel or stairs, the Lead Marshal
prints the route map and gives it to a special marshal called
the 'scout'. The scout then leads a handful of marshals around the
route a few days before the skate is scheduled to take place. As
well as learning the route beforehand and showing the marshals where
to go on the night, the scout also ensures that every road junction
is covered by a marshal before the main pack of skaters arrives. You
can sometimes spot the scout hanging around on a street corner
waiting for marshals, bearings or lubricant, but most skaters
normally never see the scout or even know that we have one. Well we
do, so dib dib dib and wiggle my woggle.
