== THIS WEEK ==
Christmas is now well and truly over, but this FRIDAY we're off
on a Charles Dickens themed tour of London.
Our first point of interest is across Westminster Bridge at the site
of Astley's Royal Equestrian Amphitheatre, which featured in many of
Dickens' stories. Then we'll be doing the Lambeth Walk, before winding
our way around the Obelisk where David Copperfield had his money
stolen by a young man with a donkey-cart.
A brief tour of jailhouses takes us past The King's Bench Prison
(featured in David Copperfield and Nicholas Nickleby) and Marshalsea
Debtor's Prison, where Dickens' father resided whilst 12-year-old
Charlie had lodgings in a rented attic in nearby Lant Street (Pickwick
Papers).
After a short stop at London Bridge, we head up to Guy's Hospital
(Pickwick Papers) before heading into the city past the Monument
(Barnaby Rudge, David Copperfield) and alongside St Paul's. Next it's
downhill to Temple (A Tale of Two Cities) and Lincoln's Inn Fields
(Bleak House, David Copperfield). We then head north around Gray's Inn
- one of the four Inns of Court, featuring in many of his stories and
where Dickens was once a solicitor's clerk.
Finally, we pass Dickens' old haunts in Doughty Street and Tavistock
Square, before leaving the old scribe behind to run down Marylebone,
round Grosvenor Square, Bond Street and Green Park.

The SUNDAY STROLL is titled "Rainbow Road". While you may have seen
our very own Tom in a yellow vest and speed skates marshaling the LFNS
and Sunday Stroll, this is his first outing in the role of lead
marshal. Don't miss out on this golden opportunity to experience the
red hot kaleidoscope that is London. Prey for blue skies because we've
got the green light to skate along a colourful route that will be
anything but grey. More details of the route will be posted on our web
site in a day or two.
== LAST WEEK ==
Thanks to those of you who turned out for the LONDON FRIDAY NIGHT
(SUPERHERO) SKATE. Actually, there were so few skaters that it
sometimes seemed more like a route check (where the marshals skate the
'route' on their own to 'check' it before the skate). In any event,
all those that turned up for the LFNS seemed to really enjoy
themselves. The (very) few that made it to the end are, indeed,
superheroes.
And remember, people, that wasn't rain - it was liquid coolant for
skaters.
SUNDAY afternoon proved that just eighty skaters (and a few marshals)
can summon enough psychic energy to hold back the weather. Despite
threatening clouds and occasional spits of something from the sky, the
appalling weather held off long enough for us to run the Stroll in a
leisurely easterly direction, pausing at Chancery Lane just long
enough to jeer at the weather gods.
Our return trip took us through Trafalgar Square and up The Mall to
finish with the traditional sprint up Constitution Hill. An impressive
number of skaters raced the marshals for Hyde Park Corner and no one
was left behind for Her Majesty's corgis to savage.

== MOVING ON ==
After many (two) years of loyal service, the garage that houses our
beloved Firebrox music bike is retiring in the autumn. While we wish
her all the best for her future and pass no judgment on bingo as a
pastime, the news leaves our bike looking for replacement storage,
preferably as close to Hyde Park Corner as possible. And cheap (or
free): the LFNS and Sunday Stroll are free events organised entirely
by volunteers, so we don't have much cash to spend.
24 hour access on weekends is a requirement, and electricity to charge
Brox's batteries is a bonus. If you know of a garage with a bike-size
(about 4x8ft, according to our dim recollection) space available,
write to us through the feedback form.
== SMILE PLEASE ==
If you have taken photographs of the Sunday Stroll or London Friday
Night Skate and would like your photographs to be added to our web
site, all you have to do is upload them to Flickr and tag them. You
will need an account with Flickr but these are free of charge and easy
to setup.
* Upload your photos to Flickr and tag them 'yyyymmdd' according to
the date of the skate. For example, '20080427' is the 27th of April
2008.
* The first time you send us some photos you will need to join the
LFNS group on Flickr. Membership requests have to be approved by
us, so this is easier if you've already taken some pictures of the
skates that we can look at.
* Use the "post to group" button on your Flickr page and post them to
the LFNS group. This will send them to our site, where they will be
added automatically. We should soon be able to display the
photographer's name along with each picture too...
If you're already sending pics - thanks! Don't forget, you own the
copyright to your photos even if they are on our site.

== SKATES FOR AFRICA ==
Burkina Faso is a small country in Western Africa, and we've had a
letter from the Burkina Faso Skate Association asking us to send our
old wheels and bearings - they might be too worn for you but they've
probably got enough life in them to be useful to the BFSA.
While you might not want to go to the expense of sending your old
skate stuff to BFSA in a dedicated parcel, there's a small chance you
know someone that is sending a parcel to Burkina Faso for some other
reason. If so, BFSA suggests popping your old skate bits in that
parcel, then drop BFSA a line and they'll do the rest.
If anyone can help, please contact Association Burkina Glisse, 01 BP:
97 Ouagadougou 01, Burkina Faso. If you can read French, the website
is here...
