===LFNS===

Screw you, guys! This Friday we're off to South Park, to sample
Chef's Salty Balls. Don't believe us? Then check out this week's
route. Sol will be leading us on a tour of the parklands of south
central London, with half time at Parsons Green. Please try to keep to
the left of the white line, and let your marshals pass, as unlike
Kenny, none of us can be resurrected from a head on collision with a
Chelsea Tractor in time for next weeks skate.

===Sunday Stroll===

Not booked your holiday yet? This week the Sunday Stroll takes you on
a whirlwind Round The World trip in just 90 minutes. We'll be skating
past 30 embassies in Mayfair, Marylebone, and Fitzrovia. After
extensive re-routing we will be visiting the Seychelles via Tanzania,
Kyrgyzstan, and Tonga. Half time will be at Antigua and Barbuda. The
weather outlook for this weekend is dry, hot and sunny, so don't
forget to pack suncream and plenty of water. No need to bring your
passport - we won't be straying South of the river...

== Last Week==

===LFNS===

The number of marshals who turned up on Friday still wearing their
blue and white LSST kit from Le Mans should have given a clue as to
what the evening would hold. Despite this, we started off westward at
a sedate pace led by Bren. By the time we arrived at Hammersmith some
people were getting pretty relaxed but after half time there was a
change of Lead Marshal and a distinct change of pace. Hans, fresh from
his triumph of skating solo the whole of the 24 hour race, was out to
prove that he can do sprints as well as super-marathons. Only heavy
traffic, which brought us to a halt all too often, kept the skate from
breaking the sound barrier and enabled mere humans to keep up with our
Lead Marshal. The route is a bit of a blur - Shepherd's Green seemed
to feature somewhere before we saw Hyde Park looming up ahead - and we
arrived back at Hyde Park Corner apparently only seconds after leaving
Hammersmith.

There were very few drop-outs on the black run and a definite buzz
when we reached home. A skate in the best traditions of Friday night
skating in London! Well done everyone, and special thanks to Hans.

===Sunday Stroll===

Wombling Free - as seen on TV!

After reports that the recent influx of Tennis Activity at Wimbledon
Lawn Tennis club had resulted in several Wombles being spotted
rollerskating around the back lanes of Wimbledon, the Sunday Stroll,
led by LM Steve, mounted a one way Expedition to investigate.

Despite the uncertain weather and the World cup final that evening,
over 100 skaters turned out for the nine mile trip from Hyde Park
Corner. We had the BBC there to see us off at the start. (We got about
8 seconds on the evening news - but as it was immediately before the
world cup, millions of viewers will have seen us.)

Thanks to everybody who wore camouflage tennis clothing. Sadly none of
these elusive, gentle creatures were spotted during the 9 mile skate,
although our scout Kingsley was in hot pursuit of several promising
trails. We'll try again next year.

Apparently, roller skaters anywhere near Central Court are considered
a security threat (sounds like the tennis player camouflage wasn't
that convincing, then), so we finished our Stroll in Wimbledown town
centre, where we were met by Geoff and Saffy with strawberries and
cream - an ideal end to a great summer's afternoon.

== PROFILE VIEW ==

This week we profile one of our newest marshals - SAFFY.

Saffy started out as a quaddie when she discovered roller disco a
couple of years ago. It was only a year or so ago [is this really
true, Saffy?] that she bought herself in-lines and, as she puts it,
became biskatual and attempted a streetskate. She started on the
Wednesday skate and was "stupidly elated when I actually made it round
the whole thing without dying and have never looked back since." She
only completed her first London Friday Night Skate in March but we all
love her so much we were asking her to marshal as soon as we realised
we weren't having to push her up the hills. (That would be a fortnight
ago, then!)

Saffy's off-skate activities as the ultimate skate party girl are
legendary. Amongst her other sins, she is responsible for the annual
Skate Idle competition and she would like to take this opportunity to
apologise publicly to all those whose eardrums she has damaged!

Outside skating Saffy is a fashion designer whose clothes are often
seen on the celebs Heat and Hello. She gets to shop for work - every
girl's dream. (She said it, not me!) She is also a top illustrator and
was featured in Company magazine as their "illustrator of the year" in
2004 after entering a competition with the illustrations of
rollergirls!

Saffy's fashion background presumably accounts for the recent bikini
trend on the Stroll and she has promised to see all the skaters in hi
vis bikinis. Even Lead Marshal Brendan has promised to wear one.

Saffy likes to travel and has had some amazing trips. She has been to
Antarctica (but they wouldn't let her bring back a penguin) and
climbed to Everest base camp and Kalla Pattar in the Himalayas. Now
she is mastering hills on skates, she is planning to return there as
the destination for a Sunday Stroll later in the year.

Saffy's favourite reading is Company magazine - but only cos they give
her freebies - and, after this weekend, her favourite colour has got
to be white.

If, like Saffy, you think it's time to leave the pack and start
marshalling, please see Tanya or Natasha or contact us using the
feedback form.

== SKATES FOR NIGERIA ==

Recently I've had the pleasure of seeing the sheer joy and
exhilaration of several people completing their first street
skate. Nothing compares to that first time you strap on your skates
and join the happy throng as it wends its way around London's
streets. So when I came across a post on Serpentine Road appealing for
old skates, wheels, bearings, skate tools, pads etc, I decided to
investigate.

The Nigerian Skating Federation is planning on sending several skaters
to the UK to become ICP Certified, so that they can teach more people
in Nigeria to skate. There is, however, one small problem. There are
no skates for sale in Nigeria. So, in order for them to continue to
grow the skate scene there, they have launched an appeal for old
skates & parts, so that more people can experience the joy and freedom
of an open road and 8 (or 10) wheels ...

To find out how to get your old skates, pads, tools or wheels into
their hands, please see Asha's thread on Serpentine Road.

== IT'S A MARATHON NOT A SNICKERS ==

Well, for those of us over the age of 30 they'll always be called
Marathons. Inline marathons range in difficulty from the "fun" to the
extreme. The Goodwood Marathon, like Berlin, is aimed at skaters of
all abilities - it doesn't impose a stringent maximum time limit on
competitors, and you don't have to be a lycra clad speed freak to take
part. The same is true in many ways of the London Inline Marathon, but
it's home territory and a tougher more hilly circuit, so tends to get
a little more competitive ... If you are thinking of doing the Berlin
Marathon later in September (arguably the best marathon in the world:
smooth streets, no hills, and thousands of spectators lining the
streets to cheer you past) you can't fault Goodwood as a place to
make a discreet start.

(Editors note, be nice to the speed freaks and if you're lucky they'll
give you a tow when they've finished)

=== GOODWOOD ROLLER MARATHON ===

For the last two years the Goodwood Roller Marathon has been the
warm-up event for the London Inline Marathon (LIM), usually occurring
the weekend before. This year is no exception: 30th July 2006 at the
Goodwood Motor Racing circuit near Chichester. The event is properly
timed and the organisers encourage everyone to attend irrespective of
ability. Online registrations are open.

=== LONDON INLINE MARATHON ===

The London Inline Marathon will be held again for the last time on the
Lee Valley Cycle Circuit on the 6th August 2006. There are two
distances on offer; the half marathon (13 miles - equivalent to an
LFNS) and the full marathon (two LFNS back to back).

The event is professionally timed and you will be able to get a
breakdown of your laps after the event. If you would like a limited
edition finishers t-shirt (and a reduced price), you have until this
Friday (15th of July) to enter. After this you can enter on the day or
online but it will cost more and there will be no T-shirt to hold as
souvenir/bragging rights.

It promises to be a day of great fun with skaters of all levels - the
speed gods from UK and France and Holland, LFNS marshals, and people
from all the London street skates coming to London to compete or just
have fun. Registration online.
